Sweet and Savory Apple Butter Onion Dip Recipe
Last weekend I picked up ground sausage and cheese in hopes to make sausage balls. I finally got the urge to make them today. When I was searching recipes, I noticed Paula Deen serves hers with a mayonnaise and mustard dipping sauce. That just didn't sound good to me, but after all these years, I've never tried a sausage ball with a dip. I've just eaten them plain. I thought, surely there is something that will compliment a sausage ball without interfering with the flavor.
Then I saw the words "Musselman's Apple Butter" while searching the web for sausage ball dips and stumbled upon this gem. I just so happened to have Musselman's Apple Butter on hand, which is unusual for me. I proceeded to gather up what ingredients I had, substitutes for items I didn't have and extra goodies to make it my own Sweet and Savory Apple Butter Onion Dip Recipe.
Thanks to A Spicy Perspective, I served this dip with a recipe for sausage balls I concocted using three recipes from the web. It's delicious! Not only can use serve this dip with sausage balls as an appetizer at your next dinner party, Superbowl gathering or office pot luck, but you can also use this dip with chicken wings (as originally intended), breaded chicken fingers or even fresh veggies!
Here's my version!
Step 1: Chop Onions
Use 1/4 of a medium red onion and 1/4 of a medium yellow onion. Chop. You can use less onion or dice to spread the onion throughout the dip.
Step 2: Saute Onions
Sauté the onion in 2 tbsp. of butter on medium-low heat for 10-15 minutes or until browned.
Step 3: Mix Other Ingredients
Mix the apple butter, greek yogurt, sour cream, deli mustard and apple cider vinegar. Add pepper to taste.
Step 4: Add Sautéed Onions
Add sautéed onions to mixture.
Step 5: Mix, Refrigerate and Serve
Refrigerate for about 15 minutes to reduce the already cool mixture back down from adding the hot onions, then serve.Sweet and Savory Apple Butter Onion Dip Recipe

I canned a ton of apple butter in the fall, and love finding new ways to use it. Thanks for linking up at Sunday Recipe Wrap up!
